Wow, this is a news. Sony has introduced the new 35mm NXCAM memory camcorder with the following key features:

  • Super 35 mm CMOS Sensor
  • E-Mount interchangeable lens system
  • AVCHD Full-HD recording

It costs round about 6,000 $ and will be available next summer! More to come soon, I’ll keep you updated!

Update #1: New video

Update #2: Frame rates and recording format
The recording format for this new HD camcorder will be AVCHD, a widely supported format by many non liner editing software vendors and the same format as HXR-NX5 “NXCAM” camcorder. There is also a plan to implement 1080p (60p / 30p / 24p*2 or 50p / 25p) recording modes.
(MPEG4-AVC/H.264 compression will be used for these modes.)

It looks as if the video cameras were getting closer in terms of design to scientific imaging devices or astrophotography cameras. Compact box, not much more than sensor, PCB and connectors. I am pleased not to have hundreds of useless features. But I think it is pitty they did not go for 2K or 4K. HD is becoming the lowest resolution standard nowadays.

Yeah it looks like a lunchbox, and to be honest Sony is a little bit late with all this stuff, don’t you think?

Hmmm thanks for yet another funny and interesting post. Where do you receive your inspiration for all this :|?

I’ll reserve judgment until the product actually ships. If Sony is simply packaging a 35mm sensor into a videocam-like box, essentially reconfiguring a still HDSLR camera into a “New” product, meh. Without some real workflow usefulness, it’ll be just another tool to overdo rack focus effects. (Am I the only one getting weary of that?) However, if Sony can pull off a relatively good image (meaning dang good in low light) and squeeze it all into a MPEG4-AVC/H.264 stream to an SDHC card, more power to them. Of course, I’d like to see the usual set of features including built-in ND filters, XLR inputs, and HD-SDI or HDMI out. That would be a price leader and a compelling buy. It’s a stretch, but I wish to see OEM or decent adapters for Canon and Nikon lenses.

  • There’s nothing they can do against my $1600 dollars Canon 7D 😀

  • I’m with you Luis Antonio! (solo el nombre o también el español?)

Absolutely true Paco!!! the size of the sensor is not enough now a days! and beyond the 2 or 4K I would very much like to see 10bit 4:4:4 signal!!! for a truly significant change and better post workflow!!!

  • Hey Sebastian! let me thank you! because I based mi web site in your web site’s structure! http://www.ignaciowalker.com/ see ya!

Umm guys, it’s a prototype, it’s not going to look like that. Just like the VG10 doesn’t look exactly like its prototype. When they add a handle on top, it will look more like a camcorder. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a fold-out shoulder rest to make it a semi-shouldermount. Perhaps even an EVF on the rear of the handle. I would expect a built-in stereo mic on the handle as well as 2 XLR inputs, with ergonomic manual controls. The 7D is not a 35mm sensor. This camcorder will have an unlimited recording duration. Plenty of reasons why dedicated camcorders are better for video than DSLRs. As for 4K… Man, why is it when something new comes out, people have unrealistic expectations? These are the people who never buy anything. Yes it would be nice, but I am not expecting it for $5,000. Not yet anyway.

  • Come on Alex 😀 we are just dreaming! hahaha

besides, the APS-C (7D) sensor is almost the same as the super 35mm size 😉

Did you even imagined the technologies that we have today 10 years ago?

  • KC says:

Why in the hell would they make a 35mm sensor and compress the video to AVCHD? Stupid. That’s like eating a steak with the plastic wrap still on it.

  • Alex says:

@Ignacio, you are correct – APSC and Super 35 are about the same, I momentarily thought they were talking about a 36×24 sensor, but it’s probably the same one that is in the VG10. Super35 sounds more impressive though, and that’s Sony’s big plan here is marketing. 10 years ago, I thought the VX1000 was the best thing in the world, and nothing was likely to get much better than that! haha. (for prosumers). OK I think the VX2000 was out by then, and that’s when I bought my TRV900! Digital video baby! Is the world ever going to get better than a 3CCD Mini DV camcorder? haha! I remember thinking it would be good to have a Sony HDCAM, I don’t even remember what the list price was on that, but it wasn’t in my budget. 🙂

Yep, people don’t realize today just how good we have it. They still nitpick at what it doesn’t have.

@KC, because people are asking for it. AVCHD is a good format for enthusiasts, who don’t have the money for a PMW-F3 or RED.
